Screen printing is one of the most versatile printing processes and a wonderful way for students to experiment with the art of printmaking.
In this studio experience students will explore how visual media can spread powerful messages to evoke change.
Students will be given a brief history of screen printing and how it has been used as an artistic means of spreading messages and see the evolution of the medium into our digital age. The will explore how visual media influences their lives today and see how it has been used throughout history to influence the masses.
Students will collaborate in small groups to create messages for action through visual means. They will then print their designs on reusable canvas tote bags.

Explore Shape Silk Screen Printing

Screen printing is one of the most versatile printing processes and a wonderful way for students to experiment with the art of printmaking. In this studio experience students will be given a brief history of screen printing, design an image, and screen print a series of their image using individual screens and a single layer of colour.
Using pre-cut shapes, students will explore explore how objects are broken down into basic shapes, design and build an image using shapes and how artists use composition.
Final products to choose from:
Paper and Fabric Substrate: A run of 4 printed images, 2 on paper perfect for framing or memory book and 2 on fabric to be used for future classroom sewing project or framing.

In this studio experience students will be given a brief history of screen printing, draw and cut-out a basic image – such as a letter or number – to be used as a template, and screen print a series of their image using individual screens and a blend of coloured ink.
Creating their own personal symbol, students will explore how artists can modify basic images to reflect their identity in art.

Serigraphy: Layered Silk Screen Printing

Session Length: 2 hours

This studio allows students to create a screen printed image with a focus on the artistic application of this medium. The printing ink is layered to create a multicoloured image. Following a brief introduction into printmaking and the various ways it has been used over time, the students will print 2 flats of different colours. While the first layer is drying, the students design a template using a photocopy of an image as a reference, which they will print layered over the initial flats, and additional un-inked substrate, using a different colour.
Using a reference image, students will explore how artists modify popular images to share their own stories. Students will consider how to change images to give them new meaning.
Final Product: A series of 3 layered images on mixed media paper
